A Message from John Eveleigh to all Otley Residents...
John Eveleigh says... "My case is simple: Otley can and must be a better place to live, work and bring up children. The increase in litter, graffiti and a general sense of dereliction in the town is a source of sadness, frustration and anger for all of those who live in what should be a lovely place. Sadness at the slow decline of Otley as a showpiece Yorkshire town, frustration at the lack of consultation on any changes that are taking place, and anger at the lost opportunities to make a real difference to the lives of local people. These failures all point to the fact that Otley has lost direction. There has been no leadership from the Lib/Dems on either the Town council or the City Council since Labour lost control of both. Things just happen in Otley. Fences are put up that no one wants, sites are left derelict for years with no sense of urgency to do something with them, and the road system seems in a permanent state of disrepair. Is there anyone in charge? I believe that there is a widening gap between how democratic government is supposed to work and the everyday experiences of people in the town. Clearly there are agencies, authorities and other organisations making decisions about life in Otley but their activities are hidden in a fog. This makes them unaccountable and unresponsive to criticism. If elected, it is my intention to try to bring local government back to the people of Otley. I shall insist that local people are given opportunities to give their views on anything that affects the town. In my manifesto I make pledges to the people of Otley that I will keep if you elect me to represent you on 1st May. Otley deserves better than what it’s getting at the moment. Vote for change!"
