John Eveleigh has led the campaign to
secure a lorry ban for Otley. He has led from the front, and has been
active in establishment of Safety on Otley’s Roads (SOOR) - which he has
chaired for the last 2 and a half years.
As
chair of SOOR John has led deputations to Leeds City Council, given
evidence to scrutiny boards, attended North Yorkshire County Council
Planning meetings and provided information to the Planning Inspectorate.
When Leeds City Council was under Labour control,
SOOR received an undertaking from Cllr Keith Wakefield (then Leader of
the City Council) that the Council would pursue a policy of working
towards a complete north/south ban for all through HGV traffic.
|
However, when in 2004, Leeds City Council changed
to a Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration the Council became
lukewarm to the idea of pursuing a ban. As a result there’s been three
years of drift and inaction. Worse still
the local Liberal Democrat City Councillors who claimed all along to
support the principles of the north/south ban have gone back on their
promise and indicated that they will support a partial ban - effectively
a one-way system for HGV’s.
SOOR are
outraged that, once again, the City Council has let Otley down.
Cllr John Eveleigh said ‘it’s appalling that the 3
Lib Dem Councillors are so gutless, the release of this letter, clearly
implicates them in the decision - they should now apologise to SOOR and
local residents for so spectacularly caving in to the pressure from
their party bosses in Leeds.’
