John
Eveleigh has been selected to fight the Otley and Yeadon seat for Labour
in next May’s Leeds City Council elections.
John is a well-known and
popular local campaigner, with a proven track record. He fought the seat
last May and secured an increased share of the vote for Labour. He said
‘the City Council seat is in our grasp, and people have told me that
they’re heartily sick of the way the current Councillors take them for
granted – the increase in our share of the vote last time indicates that
the momentum is with us.’
48 year old John has worked in
the NHS all his working life (getting on for 30 years), he is committed
to the values of the health and public services.
Married, with 3 children, John
has lived in Otley for over 20 years. His wife, Hilary teaches in a
local school and his youngest daughter is at the town’s Prince Henry’s
School. His son left Prince Henry’s after his ‘A’ levels last summer.
His eldest daughter is away at University in York.
John served on Otley Town
Council for 12 years (1995-2007) during this time he was Mayor of Otley
(1999/2000) and Leader of the Council from June 2006 to May 2007.
He
is an experienced local campaigner, and has been at the forefront of
many local campaigns and initiatives for the past 20 years – these have
included:
- The Wharfedale Hospital Campaign
- The campaign to Save Otley Civic Centre
- The new library
- The Courthouse Project
- The campaign against through HGV’s in Otley
- Established Otley Action for Older People
and Otley
- Disabled People’s Advisory Group.
- The campaign against the fence on the River Wharfe
- Improved public transport
